Cubase 6 CPU overloads and serious delay in audio track

Post by fredmillard »

Folks,

My project consists of 2 midi tracks, one guitar track. While recording a single vocal track I am getting CPU overload messages, and there is s serious delay between the live performance and what I hear in my headphones. On the vocal track I have 2 inserts, taht being compression and pitch correction. I have tried to change the buffer size to no avail. I am running a MacBook Pro with an Intel Duo Core 2 Ghz chip and 2 Gb RAM. I've tried to change the clock from device and to Mac, also to no avail. I am running no programs in the background. I just don't know what to do. Any suggestions - please? thanks Fred

Aloha Fred,
Are you using "Built-in-Audio' for your mic input?
If so your delay could be caused by latency.
Most folks use some sort of audio I/O device to not only get better sound
but also to lower latency.

What's your buffer setting?

Remember it's a computer so there is a trade off.
A higher buffer setting will aid when playing back stuff
but will also suffer at the input stage resulting in a delay.
This is all explained quite well in the C6 Getting Started videos.
I've tried to change the clock from device and to Mac
,
Where is this clock thing you mentioned?
On the vocal track I have 2 inserts, taht being compression and pitch correction.
If you record this way this will also require more cpu juice.
Most folks will record straight on to a track and add things like compression and pitch correction during the
playback/mixing stage.
Altho' there is no wrong or right way to do this process most people record
relatively straight and then add the sugar and spice later.

If you are using the compressor to tame audio peaks to avoid clipping,
by the time you get sound into the puter 'it might be too late.
Here is where an outboard comp/limiter is effective.
It can tame those peaks before they hit the computer.

BTW what mic are you using?

Your MBP should be able to handle the project you posted with no probs.

Sorry for my ignorance, i can not figure out how to solve this problem yet -i just started using the update to Cubase 6 and having similar problem with CPU overload / audio drops. Please explain in a simple way in how to go about fixing this. much appreciate it. thanks,

Turn off your effects and apply them later in the process.
Don't monitor through Cubase, monitor through a hardware mixer or software that comes with your audio card, assuming you have one. Either way, you have zero latency.

Those two things will solve your problem.
