Cubase Log File

Post by Atardecer » Tue Aug 01, 2017 6:48 am

So apart from crashing every second minute Cubase is not producing (or I cant find) the .LOG file. There's is nothing in Program directory or the path specified in the crash. Am I missing something? For many of the crashes Cubase is also not producing crash dumps :(

Thanks,
James

Hi,

What kind of LOG would you expect? Cubase should create the crashdump file, which is located in Documents/Steinberg/crashdumps folder. This is the only one log file you can get from Cubase.

Well, the one that the Cubase crash message says that it makes. You know, this old friend...

"A serious problem has occurred. Please try to save your project under another name and then restart Cubase 8.5.exe. If this problem persists please contact Steinberg Technical Support with a description of what you do to create this problem, and the created file C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase 8.5\Cubase 8.5.LOG.

Click OK to be informed about further occurrences of serious problems, or 'Cancel' to suppress these warnings in case of cascading warnings!"

The thing is that when these crashes occur dumps are created in the Documents/Steinberg/CrashDumps folder, not a log file, even though it says a LOG file in the crash message. I dont know why the crash message references a log file. The last log file was created over a year ago, which I'd sent to a friend for debugging something else.

The problem is that most of my crashes are because of the old "Cubase 8 has stopped working etc... (image attached)

These do not produce crash dumps, I'm guessing because they're windows error messages. My problems are described in this post:
www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=229&t=121056
In short my only workaround to be able to open stuff I've worked on the previous day is to load my template or another busy project first, then load the project i need and activate. This doesn't get around the fact that the sesssions are highly volatile though. There's nothing that isnt in these sessions that isn't in the template.

I also have Reaper and Ableton Live installed on this system and am not experiencing any crashing or stability issues with plugins or otherwise in those programs. Its an otherwise stable system, except for Cubase. I have logs from Windows event viewer (attached as xml) pointing to ntdll.dll as the faulting module (windows system file) mostly but I dont know how reliable that is and could probably point to anything in itself. I've contacted Tech Support thru Yamaha here last week in Australia but had no feedback as yet. Have a project deadline on Monday and strongly doubt I'll make it at this rate. I just have little to no confidence in the program, and I've been using it for about 15 years.

Regards

PS. I've also installed Cubase 9 alongside 8.5 (separate install) and the issues are the same there too.

Hi,

The Screenshot you sent, this is not standard Cubase message. Even the load window looks different. So you use any Windows modification/extension?

AFAIK, ClassicShell is installed (by system maker): http://classicshell.net/

I'm not sure what you mean by load screen looks different. I've used that before and never experienced issues with it. I've tried it with and without. It makes no difference to the crashes.

Steinberg support is virtually non-existent. Why did they do away with submitting support tickets? For those of us outside the EU, it blows.
I sincerely regret purchasing the 9 update, and its likely the last purchase Steinberg gets from me.

Hi,

By the "load window"... I can see part of the Loading window behind the message. But even this doesn't look like standard Windows window. It's customized.

I would try to revert Windows to a standard view, and try it again.

Hi, yes as stated before I've tried it with and without. It makes no difference with or without the shell. It's only cosmetic. That screenshot is just the project loading up on a blank cubase background and crashing before it does. How's it supposed to look?

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry I don't know classicsell application at all, I don't know what is it responsible for. So this one does the Windows GUI changes, right? Could you post the screenshot without using it, please?

Could you share the crashlog(s) via PM and some sharing service (like Dropbox), please? I could have a look, where does it crash.

Hi Martin,

I've attached whatever crash dumps I could find. I guess these do not account for the many other crashes that do not produce dump files, which are more frequent than these. Perhaps I'm dealing with multiple issues. I've put them up offsite as too big to attach here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/aza98ammdf6qh ... s.zip?dl=0

Some of them appear to contain zero data. Trying to meet this deadline, will get to screens without ClassicShell. Thank you for your assistance.

Cheers
