+1 rename or alias. Don't need it for all plugins but when you do need it it's very helpful.

Things are moving along nicely... if you're not in a hurry to get somewhere.

Does anyone have any experience with update-compatibilty - both on fabfilter's and the cubase's side? i really don't wanna risk messing anything up.
Aside having to redo the short name version of an updated plugin, I have not encountered any problems at all with this method. Mind you, I have not updated my Cubase 9.5.41 to version 10. When and if I do, I will be renaming them all again (I don't have many plugins making this process quite easy and fast). If you do go ahead with this, make a backup of said file before you begin. 8-)
A quick update for anyone going for the afore-mentioned work-around of renaming plugins via the vst3plugins.xml.

Afterall, this is NOT update-compatible with Fabfilter Plugins! I just updated all FF plugs whereupon Cubase didn't find them anymore. What I probably should have done before updating, is reverting the plugin names to their default ones so the FF-installer can replace the plugin-paths, and not create double references in the XML which happened in my case.
I ended up un- & re-installing FF plugs and renaming them, and now everything is working again. A tedious process all in all, though. Hence it would really be great if Steinberg would implement this in the near future.

A simple AKA (Also Known As) column in the plugin manager, where you can type any txt you want to see instead of the plugins real name.
If empty no changes are made.
Easy to manage and have many plugins in view, when trying to come up with unique names that are not already in use.
Nothing fancy just simple and workable.

This will make be a real difference, especially with many plugin manufacturers having their company name take up most or all of the plug-in title space, like FabFilter and Unfiltered Audio among others.
Cubase 9.5, Trashcan Mac 6-core 3.7ghz, High Sierra 10.13.4 OS, AMD FirePro D300 Dual, 64 gig RAM, plugins galore, some hardware, a bunch of real instruments and synths, Apollo 8 TB, etc., etc., and two cats

Would be nice to rename some plugins with long names and remove stuff like "_x64" from others

+1!

if this doesn't provide a way to change the *class* of a VST (i.e., move to Synths or Drums or whatever), please include that as well! I don't mind the names so much - mine seem to be pretty clear to me, if only from familiarity - but sometimes they're classified in the wrong sections.

you know that you can create and name folders and move the plugins into them freely, don´t you?

Yeah. But I find the mechanics of organizing the plugin lists unwieldy for me, so I want a shortcut. :)
